We will explore the many facets of raising a preteen as they move through middle school, with an emphasis on ways to keep the doors of communication open as children enter adolescence. Sessions take place on Wednesday evenings (Feb 27th to March 27th) from 7 PM to 8:30 PM. This 5 part series will explore the many facets of raising a preteen as they move through middle school, with an emphasis on ways to keep the doors of communication open as our children enter adolescence. Covering essential understandings of this phase of child development, the five sessions give participants time to explore their concerns and consider strategies to respond helpfully to emerging behaviors. Our facilitator will lead participants in reflective exercises to consider what parenting approaches they currently use and how those work well and, where there are snags, what can be done to shape their approach so it is more calm, mindful, responsive to stressful situations and effective in maintaining trust. Participants will learn to use self-compassion as a means to enhance our abilities to listen and attend to our children and our inner selves. The peer environment will also be considered with ideas shared on how to approach another parent if something concerning arises. Throughout the series we will address the stresses of competition and comparing ourselves to others in our high-achieving, affluent community.
