Freedom to Learn: An Analysis of the Roles of
Play and Curiosity in
Children’s Natural Ways of Learning
Evidence is presented that children's playfulness and curiosity are powerful vehicles for education, but to allow them to function effectively we must create educational environments that foster rather than suppress these natural drives. Starting with an overview of the nature and biological purposes of play and curiosity, we’ll then discuss their roles in children's social, moral, emotional, physical, and intellectual development.
Dr. Peter Gray, a research professor of psychology at Boston College, is a specialist in developmental and evolutionary psychology. His recent research and writing has focused on the value of play, including its educational value for children and it societal value in promoting peaceful, egalitarian ways of living.
12:00-12:45 Catered Lunch
12:45-3:00 Afternoon Session with Ed Miller, Co-Founder of the U.S. Alliance for Childhood.
Defending the Early Years:
How to Advocate for Play in the
Era of Standards and Accountability
The movement to improve education and teachers' performance by measuring children's learning, mainly through standardized tests, has transformed most public kindergartens--by greatly reducing or eliminating free play and replacing it with highly structured instruction, almost entirely in literacy and math skills. This trend is now pushing early academics down into preschool, with new standards and assessments in place or coming soon. What can teachers, parents, and school leaders who believe in creative play, imagination, and whole child development do to resist these forces?
Ed Miller is a writer, activist, and recovering journalist who works with nonprofit groups, schools, researchers, and policymakers dedicated to children's rights, especially the right to play. He is a founder and senior researcher for the U.S. Alliance for Childhood, a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Child Development Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, and director of a new initiative called Defending the Early Years.
